Need something else?

If you lost something in a yellow or green taxi, you can get contact information for your taxi’s garage. Then you can call to see if they have your item and arrange to pick it up.

You are more likely to find your lost item if you can identify the taxi.

  • Yellow Taxis: The ID is the medallion number, which is four letters and numbers.
  • Standby Yellow Taxis: Used when a yellow taxi breaks down. The ID is six letters and numbers.
  • Green Taxis: The ID is the license number, which is five letters and numbers.

You can find the medallion or license number on the taxi receipt, the side of the taxi, and the partition in the taxi.

cave in

A taxi driver who finds an item should try to return it to the owner if possible. If they can't, they are required to take it to one of eight Police Lost and Found Centers. In addition to contacting the taxi's garage, you can call these centers to see if your item has been turned in there.

Then you can call the garage to see if they have your item and arrange to pick it up.

If you don’t have the medallion number or the garage information is not found in the TLC Lookup tool, the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) will try to identify your taxi using the time and location of your trip.

During Business Hours

Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 4 PM, the NYC311 Call Center will transfer you to TLC. TLC will ask for details about your trip and your lost item to try to figure out which taxi you took. If they can figure it out, they will give you contact information for your taxi's garage. Then you can call the garage to see if they have your item and arrange to pick it up.

Call 311 to report the problem during hours.

After Business Hours and Holidays

On weekends, holidays, and Monday to Friday from 4 PM to 8:30 AM, you can file a Service Request. TLC will usually act on it within two business days. If they are able to figure out which taxi you took, they will update the Service Request with contact information for the taxi's garage. Then you can call the garage to see if they have your item and arrange to pick it up.

If you find something left in a taxi by another passenger, you can:

  • Turn the item over to the taxi driver.
  • Bring the item to one of the Police Lost and Found Centers.
  • Report the item to the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC).

A taxi driver who finds property in their taxi should try to return it to the passenger if possible. If not, they should take it to a Police Lost and Found Center or report it to TLC.

The City does not charge a fee for helping to locate property lost in a yellow taxi.

The Taxi and Limousine Commission is associated with NYC Accessible Dispatch. Other websites that have information about yellow taxis are privately owned. They have no affiliation with TLC or other City agencies. If one of these private companies charged you a fee to help find or return your lost property, you should contact that private company directly with any questions or complaints.
